Book and Magazine Design

Project 1: Book Cover Series – Paula Scher

Problem Statement: Princeton Architectural Press requests that you design three cover options for a book series on historically significant graphic designers. Each cover needs to convey the spirit and intellectual force behind the chosen designer as well as communicate that the individual book is part of a larger series of books.

Goals: The design should convey the spirit of the designer, her work, and her thinking. The design solution should also appeal to the audience as described above. Research on other book categories that appeal to this demographic should be undertaken and documented. The design should convey a sense of high quality. The series will fall into the category of “art or coffee table books.”

Paula Scher is an American graphic designer, painter and an art educator in design. She has been a partner of the Pentagram design firm since 1991. Her projects include designing logos for Windows 8, Metropolitan Opera, Citibank, Tiffany & Co and identity creation of The Public Theater. Her famous poster designs for The Public Theater are showcased in the exhibition at the Manchester School of Art. Paula Scher’s designs show typography, hierarchy, pop culture and fine art. The abstract typefaces in her designs are influenced by Russian constructivism. Her work exists in physical form like on the streets, public spaces, packaging, and in cultural organizations like theaters and art museums. She loves working on environments and environmental graphics and loves when people engage with them.

Project 4: Magazine Rebranding – EatingWell Magazine

Problem Statement: You are tasked in choosing a magazine that will serve as your redesign project that will entail a complete rebranding of its visual aesthetic. This will include the magazine’s nameplate, cover design, table of contents, brief periodical articles/section, featured articles/section, and an infographic. The magazine should fall within the “Food / Wine” category. The magazine was created into a modern and an easy to read layout with a spread on Salads on the Run, Healthy Eating during the Covid-19 pandemic, and Top Cooking Trends.
